The Reformation A large number of clergy were associated with Ribe Cathedral prior to the Reformation in 1536. Following the Reformation, the clergy was greatly reduced. At the same time, the King forced the church to hand over all its gold and precious metal.

Hans Tausen was the protagonist of the Danish Reformation. He was Bishop of Ribe from 1542 until his death in 1561. Hans Tausen’s house is located next to the Cathedral, but the building only represents part of the original bishop’s palace. A statue of Hans Tausen can also be found by the Cathedral. He translated the Bible into Danish, wrote a collection of sermons and composed numerous psalms. One of Denmark’s greatest hymn writers served as Bishop of Ribe from 1741 to 1764. Brorson lived at Taarnborg with his second wife and their large brood of children. Every day at 08.00 and 19.00, the carillon bells of Ribe Cathedral play the tune to Brorson’s hymn “Den Yndigste Rose Er Funden” (Now found is the fairest of roses).
