Anders Sørensen Vedel
A priest and historian who lived at Liljebjerget in Skolegade in Ribe until his death in 1616. He published a collection of 100 Danish folk songs printed at his own printing works at Liljebjerget.

Ambrosius Stub
A schoolteacher who lived in Sønderportsgade until his death in 1758. He gave us countless poems, as well as a handful of hymns in the new hymn book.

Anders Bording
Born in 1617 in Ribe in the building known today as The Old Town Hall. He published the first newspaper in Denmark in 1666 – in verse!

Kjeld Abell
Dramatist and author of, among other things, a play entitled “Melodien, der blev væk” (The Melody that Got Lost). Kjeld Abell was born in Ribe in 1901 and lived at Graabrødregade 17.

Oluf Ring
Composer whose works include a setting of “Danmark nu blunder den lyse nat” (Denmark, now slumbers the twilight night). He lived in Sct. Peders Gade and also composed to melody to Ambrosius Stub’s “Den kjedsom vinter gik sin gang” (The tiresome winter now is gone).

Jacob A. Riis
Born in Skolegade in 1849. Moved to the United States in 1870, where he worked tirelessly for the poor and homeless in New York.
